Abstract:

Objective

To analyze the characteristics of patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI) treated before hospital in Zhenjiang Emergency Center.

Methods

A retrospective method was used to make a descriptive analysis of 212 TBI patients treated by Zhenjiang Emergency Center from January 2019 to December 2019. There were 115 males (54.2%) and 97 females (45.8%), aged 0 (newborn) ~ 84 years, with an average of (30.5±11.5) years; Male to female ratio was 1.2∶1. The data analyzed included the general information of patients, injury characteristics and intervention measures.

Results

Among 212 patients with TBI, the most common cause of injury was road traffic accidents (n=155, 73.1%), followed by assault (n=26, 12.3%) and falls (n=16, 7.5%). Lower limbs were most frequently injured (n=175, 82.5%), followed by upper limbs (n=85, 40.1%). There were 87 patients (41.0%) with injury sites i 2. Most patients had mild traumatic brain injury (Glasgow coma score≥13; n=182 cases, 85.8%). The most common interventions for trauma patients were oxygen inhalation (n=198, 93.4%), hemostatic bandaging (n=179, 84.4%), splint fixation (n=129, 60.8%), infusion (n=79, 37.3%) and neck brace fixation (n=39, 18.4%).

Conclusion

The main cause of traumatic brain injury (TBI) is road traffic accidents, and further efforts should be made to improve road traffic safety to better prevent TBI. The professional skills and training methods of pre-hospital emergency personnel for patients with brain injury still need to be improved.
